How is brain cancer diagnosed, and what tests are involved?

"Welcome to Fight Cancer Global's informational Blog series. Our aim is to empower individuals with knowledge and resources to combat cancer. Today's topic will explore how brain cancer is diagnosed and what tests are involved, offering valuable insights and actionable steps to aid you and your family in the fight against cancer.

Diagnosing brain cancer typically begins with a neurological examination. This includes tests of your reflexes, muscle strength, eye movement, and your ability to feel various sensations. The neurologist is looking for anything unusual that might suggest a problem with your brain or spinal cord.

Medical imaging is a key part of diagnosing brain cancer. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan is often the first test ordered. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the brain. It's especially good at revealing the size, shape, and location of any tumors.

In some cases, a CT (computed tomography) scan might be used. This type of scan uses a series of X-rays to create cross-sectional images of your brain. It's faster than an MRI and can be used if you have certain types of implants that aren't MRI-compatible.

Sometimes, a PET (positron emission tomography) scan may be performed. This test involves injecting a small amount of a radioactive substance, which helps to highlight any cancerous cells in the brain.

A biopsy may be needed if imaging tests show a tumor. During a biopsy, a neurosurgeon removes a small sample of tissue for examination under a microscope. This helps determine whether the tumor is cancerous and, if so, what type of cancer it is.

A lumbar puncture, or spinal tap, might be performed. This procedure involves taking a sample of cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord, to look for cancer cells or other signs of problems.

Blood tests can't diagnose brain cancer, but they can help give your doctor a better idea of your overall health and how well your organs are functioning. They can also help your doctor to determine if you are healthy enough to undergo surgery or other treatments.

The molecular testing of the tumor can provide important details about its specific characteristics. This information can help guide treatment decisions by determining whether certain therapies are likely to be effective against the tumor.

If a tumor is found, your doctor will assign it a grade based on its appearance under a microscope. Lower grade tumors are slower-growing and less likely to spread, while higher grade tumors are more aggressive and often more difficult to treat.

Finally, it's crucial to know that this process can take time. It's important to ask questions and make sure you understand each step, so you can make informed decisions about your care.

In summary, diagnosing brain cancer is a multistep process that typically includes a neurological examination, imaging tests like an MRI or CT scan, a biopsy, potentially a lumbar puncture, blood tests, molecular testing of the tumor, and grading of the tumor. It's a complex process that requires patience, understanding, and a healthcare team working to get the best outcomes.
